Solutions Developer
Contract
United States
Cincinnati OH
English

This need is for a developer for solutions to support internal company employees (our “client”) that are leveraged from existing enterprise platforms and tools in ways that maximize value and minimize risk. Often this requires some degree of customization. Our goal is to provide those kinds of customizations within approved architectures and frameworks and in ways that minimize the overhead of support. Many of these solutions leverage SharePoint online platform and use out-of-the-box SharePoint tools to their fullest. Where efficiencies can be gained through customization, we do so in ways that do not involve managed code. We have been amazingly successful in this regard, building out solutions that are almost entirely client-side—meaning that they are achieved by focusing on the process, looking for ways to optimize those processes, and building interfaces that require only what is needed from the customer. Along the way, we have also automated these processes to minimize human-computer interactions, freeing lines of business to do what they do best. We currently need an additional resource on the team so we can continue to go fast!

Key Requirements:

  1. Business Analysis: First and foremost, the above is characterized by someone capable at design thinking. They must be able to understand the underlying goals of the solution and how existing processes meet those goals. Additionally, they must be able to break down those processes toward building new, optimal solutions. This is a very non-technical aspect of the role and probably the most important, requiring ideally at least 10 years of experience in IT. In the words of agile, it is “the art of work not done.” I characterize this as “business analysis,” but it is ultimately about solution design: being able to streamline processes and procedures, translate these human processes and procedures into technical processes and procedures.
  2. Interface Design: A second aspect of the type of work we are doing relates to interface design. As mentioned, the heart of the work that any good business analyst does is fundamentally design-oriented (streamlining, optimizing, improving). However, we highlight “design” separately because in the act of translating human processes and procedures into technical ones requires effective interface design—creating interfaces that reflect and help and support the electronic flow of information.
  3. Architecture knowledge/understanding: A third aspect of the type of work we are doing, requires understanding the technology domain in robust ways. This means understanding the domain of technology—where data is stored, how it needs to get there, how it is structured, etc. A good architect will need to plan out the entire environment and to flush out a proper governance plan. In this role, an architect will ensure optimal performance. To do this well, my ideal candidate would have a broad background with experience in areas ranging from database design (normalization, data types, indices, SQL, stored procedures, etc.), full-stack software development (C#/.NET, MVC), to front-end development (Javascript, ES6, jQuery), to server management (IIS). This experience is important because it is necessary to understand how data is structured and the protocols needed in the architecture of a given solution.
  4. SharePoint-specific knowledge: From a technology standpoint, this is possibly the most important specific requirement. Experience architecting and deploying and supporting SharePoint farms is mandatory. Understanding what services can help provide what solutions out-of-the-box. Understanding how SharePoint integrates with other tools, such as Power BI. One metric is having SharePoint Administration certification such as MCSE in SharePoint Administration.
  5. Front-end development: Since most of our solutions are currently client-side solutions relying on HTML, CSS, and Javascript (using jQuery library), having knowledge of the front-end domain is key. One of the key aspects of this is understanding how to manage asynchronous queries and responses in code with promises/deferred variables. And, to get where we need to go, to do all of this in browser-friendly ways, possibly relying on Babel or other javascript libraries to help achieve this. This also involves understanding protocols—specifically, http—and cross-domain policies that will play important roles in our ability to do integrations between SharePoint and other platforms in use.
